Barossa Valley, Adelaide Hills and the City

Saturday the 14th to Monday the 23rd January 2023

10 days, 9 nights

Please note: our 2023 dates are confirmed. However, the provisional itinerary you see here is based on an educated guess. We may tinker with things once we see the finalised STDU stage details.

Our areas of interest. Questions are.

Where will the women’s tour be and how can we fit that in?
Will there still be a Challenge Tour event on the Friday?
Will there still be a Legends night?
Is the final stage still going to go up Willunga on the Sunday?

Once we have answers to the above questions, we will 100% finalise the itinerary.

We can’t wait to get back to South Australia next year. We hope you’ll join us.

See you in Adelaide - Karl, Dean and Chris

Overview of the Tour

RIDE Holidays invites you to experience the 2023 Santos Tour Down Under. One of the best cycling events on the planet. Pull up a bike seat, sit back and let the world spin by.

We've found the perfect mix of visiting the iconic Barossa Valley, followed by the Adelaide Hills, then descending upon the city of Adelaide for the climax of the greatest cycling race in the Southern Hemisphere. Get involved with the action. Experience the thrill of seeing this world class event live!

It's not all about the race. In fact, the race is just a part of a great holiday. We focus on the magnificent cycling on offer, as well as eating at the very best South Australian restaurants and cafes. You will come home having experienced the full flavour of what the region has to offer.

Our itinerary is tailored for all levels of cyclists and changes with the daily conditions.

Throughout our 10-day tour, we've catered to meet the needs of the fast group we refer to as the whippets, right through to the more leisurely cyclist. Take a peep through our itinerary and you'll be assured that we offer a range of cycling options. And if you want to take a break for a day (or two), we've planned some great off bike activities, so you can really enjoy the wonders that this region has to offer!

And for non-riders (team Macchiato) you are very, very, welcome. Be assured, you won't just be following the cyclists. Your days will include visits to regional must-see attractions, wineries, boutique shopping, enjoying local cafes and restaurants, some walking, plus much more. This group will have their own vehicle and local guide! And by being around it all, you get to enjoy the buzz of the amazing Santos Tour Down Under.

The most common question we have is about the heat. Yes, it can get hot. However, it can also be very cool. On our last tour we had four hot days and having local guides meant that we were able to change the itinerary accordingly. We also had three days where we were riding in arm warmers and vests. Basically - we can never tell what the weather will be. What we can do is be flexible and have a plan in place for all conditions.

Day 1, Saturday 14 Jan

Welcome to South Australia

We look forward to meeting you at Adelaide Airport. Our vehicles will depart the airport just after midday. Our destination is the magnificent Barossa Valley. We stay at the fantastic Novotel Resort. Every room offers a view of Barossa's finest vines. As does the swimming pool.

This afternoon we'll help you assemble the bikes and then pop out for a short ride. Purely to get the legs turning and to find those nasty little mechanicals that may pop up.

There will be just enough time for a quiet refreshment prior to our welcoming dinner where we'll run through the plan for the next 10 days. Yes, you are now officially on holiday. Welcome to South Australia. More importantly - welcome to the Barossa.

/ Accommodation: Barossa Novotel
/ Meals Included: Dinner

PS, you are very welcome to arrive the day prior. You would then be wise to stay at our Adelaide downtown hotel on the Friday night. On the Saturday morning we will have guides available to ride to the Barossa rather than travel in the bus. We will arrange all the extra accommodation and airport transfers for you. The choice is yours.

Day 2, Sunday 15 Jan

Barossa Valley

Over the past 10 years we've tried to feature a new destination each year. For 2023 we've simply picked the best of the best. We simply cannot go passed the amazing scenic countryside of the Barossa Valley. This region offers some of the best food & wine in South Australia.

Today is all about exploring what the valley has to offer. So, sit back in the saddle and ride until your heart is content. We'll have a support van in place if the going gets tough.

Today won't be overly hilly, certainly when compared to the rest of the week. All rides will feature the Jack Bobridge trail.

The long ride is 90km, however there are certainly options to extend that. Featuring the Seppeltsfield wine region, Jacobs Creek and a Tour Down Under favourite - Menglers hill. The short ride is a shade under 60km. We've also budgeted for extra coffee stops. Flat white please.

Team Macchiato - You are booked in at Seppeltsfield for lunch, followed by a cooking demonstration at Maggie Beers. Afterwards, how about some time beside the pool?

Tonight, we've booked a local winery for dinner. This particular winery also shoe cases local produce. Our guarantee – you won’t lose any weight on this tour.

/ Accommodation: Barossa Novotel
/ Meals Included: Breakfast and Dinner

Day 3, Monday 16 Jan

Exploring the Barossa Valley

It's a bonus day in the Barossa. Usually, we stay here for two nights however in the past we've felt that was one night short.

There's plenty of road to choose from. Some is paved, and some are dirt. We pretty much pick up where we left off yesterday. Another 100km and 60km option.

Our plan is to pop up to the Whispering Wall and then heading in the opposite direction on the Jack Bobridge trail towards Gawler.

Also, in past years the STDU women’s tour has come to the Barossa. If that’s the case, we’ll definitely factor that into our plans.

Team Macchiato - Katrina is your guide and she's Adelaide born and bred. You will be well looked after. Today she has the Barossa cheese factory in her sights. That's after a nice long walk. You guys need to exercise as well…..

Tonight, we've booked the brewery for dinner. Burger thanks.

/ Accommodation: Barossa Novotel
/ Meals Included: Breakfast (Dinner own arrangements)

Day 4, Tuesday 17 Jan

It's off to the Hills!!

Today we ride across the Barossa Range and make our way to Hahndorf in the Adelaide Hills. Without doubt the best cycling in the State, arguably in all of Australia. We will have plenty of ride options today, from 50 to 100km its up to you.

You will certainly get the chance to knock off a few of Dirty Dozen. 12 nasty hills that we feature on our t-shirt. Some of you will do more, some of you will do less. No pressure.

Our plan is to see the Santos Tour Down Under today. Please note that weather conditions may change this. You will get the chance to see the great race many times over the following few days.

Riding hotel to hotel as its advantages. Your bags will be in your Hahndorf hotel rooms when you arrive. Lunch will be at the famous Lobethal bakery. I'd guess a thousand of so other cyclists will pop in for a cream bun today. It's the place to go.

We also pre-book you a massage while in Hahndorf. This afternoon would be a great time to give back to your legs.

Team Macchiato - This morning Katrina has booked the Melbas Chocolate factory followed by lunch at a local winery.

/ Accommodation: The Manna of Hahndorf
/ Meals Included: Breakfast and Dinner

Day 5, Wednesday 18 Jan

Cuddly little bears - wildlife spotting

Breakfast is at the top of Mt Lofty (700m above sea level) where the café is opening just for us. The big breakfast is unbelievably big, the views are amazing. Thousands of cyclists ride this climb daily. Bring your camera.

Team Macchiato - will also meet us at the top of Mount Lofty for breakfast followed by a visit to the Mount Lofty Botanical gardens.

Ride options vary from 60km to 100kms although only a select few would consider 100km in this part of the world. It's lumpy. Full of false flats.

Race day…Historically, today is our V.I.P STDU experience. Previous years, we were all of 1 meter away from the finish line in Uraidla when the great Peter Sagan won. Followed closely by the awesome Paddy Bevin. Our local fixer - Dingo is committed to providing you with an awesome STDU race day experience. We see 2023 as being very similar.

Tonight, is traditionally movie night. We show the very famous 'Russian fly fishing' movie followed by a more traditional cycling movie of some description.

/ Accommodation: The Manna of Hahndorf
/ Meals Included: Breakfast (Dinner own arrangements)

Day 6, Thursday 19 Jan

Off to the city we go…

We leave our Adelaide Hills paradise and head to the city. Feedback from clients in the past is that they wanted an easy day prior to tomorrows big ride. So, 70km maximum. We promise. The extra good news is that it's pretty much all downhill.

Let's see where todays STDU stage is, we will of course take the opportunity to see the fast bikes go by. We will have options for Africa today. You can see the race or rest up. It's totally up to you.

The City of Adelaide Tour Village in the City Square is only a 15 min walk from the Majestic. This race is known for its rider access, so you'll rub shoulders with legends! You should time your arrival to be there at about 4pm which is when the pro's ride (literally) through the village.

Team Macchiato - you're in for a treat. The current number one RH Team Mac Tripadvisor for South Australia is the d'Arenberg Cube (Mclaren Vale) featuring a contemporary art museum, winery and lunch. We will then drive you to Adelaide in time for a look around the race village with your loved one.

Tonight, we've arranged pasta. Pasta, pasta, pasta. You'll need every ounce of it come 6am.

/ Accommodation: Majestic Roof Garden Hotel
/ Meals Included: Breakfast and Dinner

It's Challenge Time!

Day 7, Friday 20 Jan

Early Start - It's Challenge Tour time

We won't know the actual fondo distances until June 2022 so we've included our blurb for the the last Challenge Tour. 2023 will be very similar.

Thousands of fair dinkum Aussies and a handful of fast skinny Kiwis. It's Challenge Tour Day. You'll have three ride choices - 160kms, 110kms and 80kms.

The 162kms starts 2.7km away from our hotel. Even though 162 seems like a big number it's actually not overly hilly so we would encourage as many of you as possible to go the whole distance. It's a brilliant day.

This Challenge Tour ride is the same route as the STDU professionals’ race, they start late morning and will chase us all the way to the finish. The Challenge Tour is very different to the Taupo Cycle challenge. It's a lot more relaxed and I'd encourage you to stop at all the food stations and check out the local food and coffee. I for one will be targeting the fruit loaf which I remember fondly.

We arrive at the finish and join all the other riders in a local park. RH will have a meeting point along with cold drinks. It's up to you - you can head back to the hotel straight after you finish or sit back and watch the race finish live or on the big screen.

Team Macchiato - today is all about Adelaide. Central Market, a tour of river Torrens on the Popeye, shopping, cafes, city trams and of course a fabulous lunch.

/ Accommodation: Majestic Roof Garden Hotel
/ Meals Included: Breakfast and Lunch. (Dinner own arrangements)

Day 8, Saturday 21 Jan

Legend's Night

Our plan is soooooooo cunning.

We start with the Adelaide Markets for breakfast. We'll look after your bikes. You guys go and drink coffee and eat as much as you can.

It's then a gentle 10km to the world-famous beach town of Glenelg. Whereas - we have eyes on the beach. We'll park the vans (with your togs) at a nice, secluded beach and those who want to can go and play with the sharks.

Again - lots of options. Beach or beach ride. For those who didn't ride yesterday it's pretty easy for us to clock over 100km of pure flat coastal riding. This afternoon is all about the city. Today will be your chance to visit the tour village. Lycra is perfectly acceptable. For all those cool kids - you'll also get again to visit one of the many pop-up shops. (Specialized and Black Sheepare literally across the road from our hotel)

Tonight, is the Legends' Night Dinner. Guaranteed to be a highlight. You will have plenty of photo opportunities. All the stars will be there. In the past we had Sagan and Hayman at the next table. Who will it be in 2022?

/ Accommodation: Majestic Roof Garden Hotel
/ Meals Included: Dinner (Legends' Night)

Day 9 Sunday 22 Jan

Final stage - A must see…

The final stage of the 2020 tour was held on Willunga Hill. It was awesome. Where will the ochre jersey be won in 2023?

Last stage of the Santos Tour Down Under 2023. Our day starts with breakfast at the hotel. We'll then all hop on our bikes and head towards the race start.

It's then onto the finish line. This is the stage that will ultimately decide the winner of this year's event. In fact, it may just be decided in the last 100m of the race.

We will set up a base at a restaurant nearby to the finish line. It's your home base for today so you can come and go as you please. In 2020 our guests enjoyed the ONLY restaurant at the top of Willunga, so you know we will ensure it's somewhere special. It's also our last night on tour so we'll celebrate with a nice early dinner (whole sheep) before heading back to the city. You won't lose weight on this tour.

/ Accommodation: Majestic Roof Garden Hotel
/ Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner included

Day 10 Monday 23 Jan

Home, James

The tour concludes with breakfast. Some of us will pack our bags, bikes and leave for the airport. Our tour is all but over.

We can easily look after extra accommodation if you choose to stay on. It's a really nice way to round out the holiday.

Whatever you decide - thank you for joining us. Safe travels home…

/ Meals Included: Breakfast included.
