20 to 25 January 2021

In our opinion South Australia offers the best cycling in the country. We are lucky enough to have a team of fantastic guides who call Adelaide home and cannot wait to show you around. Combine amazing cycling, brilliant local knowledge, some of the world's best wine and what else do you need?

How about the inaugural Santos Cycling Festival! Showcasing the best of Australasia cycling talent both on the road and the track. It might not be the Tour Down Under, but we do get to see the best of the local Australian National Race Series and international guest cycling talent on show, who have made Adelaide a destination for some summer racing!

This package has been designed for both those visitors who need accommodation as well as for those who already have their own booked.

We look forward to seeing you in Adelaide.

Chris and the team in Adelaide.

Barossa Valley, Adelaide Hills and the City

We have found the perfect mix of visiting the iconic Barossa Valley, Adelaide Hills and of course the City of Adelaide. It's not all about the cycling on offer. In fact, the cycling and racing is just a part of a great holiday. We focus on the magnificent cycling, as well as eating at the great South Australian restaurants and cafes. You will come home having experienced the full flavour of what's on offer.

Our itinerary is tailored for all levels of cyclists and changes with the daily conditions. Safety is key. We will always have vehicles close by - stocked with cool drinks and energy food.

Throughout our 6-day tour, we've catered to meet the needs of the fast group we refer to as the whippets, right through to the more leisurely cyclist. Take a peep through our itinerary and you will see that we offer a range of cycling options that work for everyone.

And for non-riders (Team Macchiato) you are very, very, welcome. Be assured, you won't just be following the cyclists. Your days will include visits to local attractions, wineries, boutique shopping, whilst enjoying cafes and restaurants, some walking, plus more.

Santos Festival of Cycling | Tour Itinerary

Day 1, Wednesday 20 January 2021

Welcome to South Australia

We look forward to meeting you at Adelaide Airport. Our team can coordinate and meet you there, transport you to the city hotel. Taking the hassle out of trying to fit a bike box into a small taxi.

This afternoon we will help you assemble the bikes and then pop out for a short ride. Purely to get the legs turning and to find those nasty little mechanicals that may pop up.

There will be just enough time for a quiet refreshment prior to our welcome drinks and dinner, where we run through the plan for the next few days. Yes, you are now officially on holiday.

Welcome to South Australia.

Accommodation: Hilton Adelaide
Meals Included: Dinner

PS, you are very welcome to arrive the day prior. We will arrange all the extra accommodation and airport transfers for you. The choice is yours.

Day 2, Thursday 21 January 2021

Barossa Valley

Our plan for today is simple. We ride from Adelaide to the magnificent Barossa Valley. Enjoying coffee, wine as well as seeing today's race stage. We look forward to seeing the riders up close, really smashing the pedals, with the Barossa vines as a backdrop!

Once you have had enough, you have options; one is to hop in the vehicles or simply ride back, clearly both bring you home. In summary - the perfect day.

Our point to point ride is just over 80km. For those who want a longer ride, we will add a 40km Barossa, Whispering Wall, Menglers hill loop. Remember though, it is a total 144km if you return ride home. Those who choose this will be drug tested and sent on their way.

Like all rides - they are designed with local knowledge. Avoiding busy roads and there will be 2 - 3 different speed groups. Espresso, Latte and Cappuccino. Our guides are ego free; it won't be a race, yet they certainly won't mind challenging you. Most importantly - we know where the best coffee is served. And if you feel the need - how about a pie for lunch.?

Team Macchiato - You are booked in for fantastic winery lunch, followed by a cooking demonstration at Maggie Beers.

Accommodation: Hilton Adelaide
Meals Included: Breakfast

Day 3, Friday 22 January 2021

Mount Lofty and the Adelaide Hills

Yesterday seem to work well. Let us repeat the formula today. Replacing rolling valleys with the wonderful Adelaide Hills. In our opinion the best cycling in the State, arguably Australia. We have plenty of ride options today, from 50 to 100km plus. It's up to you.

After breakfast we roll out of the city and head upwards. Up, up and away. Our first stop is Mount Lofty. 800m above sea level. Thousands of cyclists will ascend this beast today. Only a small handful will have blueberry muffins and coffee waiting. Ahhh, that would be us. We know Tony and the crew well after visiting the summit café every TDU for the past decade or so.

After coffee & cake it's a diet of hills, hills and more hills. There will be some gravel that only a local would know. Getting back to the hills - how many? Well, knock 12 hills and we'll shout you a dirty dozen t-shirt. Which is super cool and worn only by big hitters. (oh, and us)

We expect to see some great racing today, the Adelaide hills are perfect for it. Rolling hills, sweeping valleys and fast circuits, todays racing will be great. We will get the opportunity to experience riding the race route of today's stage. We have secured tickets to the race start at Birdwood. Up close and personal in a Ride Holidays pen.

Once we are done, it's a short 30km roll back to our hotel for those who still have energy. For those who would prefer a lift then sit back and let us take care of the logistics. You can nap on the way home in the van.

Team Macchiato - You join us at the top of Mount Lofty. Followed by the Melbas Chocolate factory and then lunch at the Bird in Hand winery. We will catch up with you in the city later.

Accommodation: Hilton Adelaide
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lofty café coffee and cake.

Day 4, Saturday 23 January 2021

Markets, McLaren Vale & Willunga

Our plan is soooooooo cunning.

We start with the legendary Adelaide Markets for breakfast. We will look after your bikes. You can go and drink coffee, eat as much as you can from the biggest variety in town. Then we head South, via hills or the beaches you can choose your group. Keep the blue stuff on the right and it would be difficult to get lost.

Today's race includes the legendary Willunga Hill stage of the Tour Down Under. Yes of course we will tackle the hill ourselves, once or twice if you prefer! You can even head out to the beach if your super keen. Ride Holidays has an allocated pen on the finish line.

There is only one restaurant at the top of the hill and guess who has got it. Yes, us. It is your lunch destination for today. You will not lose weight on this tour. We will not be riding back today, post lunch we will jump in the vans and head back. Rest up, a big night ahead.

* (To be confirmed) Tonight, is the annual celebration dinner for all the cyclists, both amateurs and hosted professionals in town. Rumour has it a legendary Aussie Grand Tour racer will be the special guest. Guaranteed to be a highlight.

Team Macchiato - you are in for a treat. Willunga Hill is nice but the Mclaren Vale wineries are better. We will visit a few wineries, check out the local beaches and end up at lunch with the cyclist of our group.

Accommodation: Hilton Adelaide
Meals Included: Lunch and * Festival of Cycling Celebration Dinner

Day 5, Sunday 24 January 2021

Final day of racing - A must see Crit…

A sleep in today, then we have options, more hills, or flats? What is your preference…?

We can cruise down to the beach at Glenelg and then head south for a little loop before coming back into the city. Or we can follow another local classic route, up Greenhill Road with a fast-flowy descent on the other side of Mount Lofty out to Hahndorf and a loop back around the range.

Either way we will be back to the City for a pub lunch then off to the criterium action in Victoria Park. Seeing the best cyclists in Australasia up close, fantastic. Once again from the Ride Holidays pen, we get to enjoy the racing, in the glorious parklands setting, cheer on your favourites. The combination of road, track and UCI Aussie and NZ guest riders should make this very interesting to watch.

We can easily walk to the circuit from the hotel, or ride you decide. Perhaps we can grab a pub lunch beforehand as there are plenty of choices in the city.

Team Macchiato: Jump on a tram and visit seaside of Glenelg, then the City is yours! Lunch, shopping, sights and more.

A great day out to finish our Cycling Adelaide adventure, join us for a celebratory cocktail party to end the day!

Accommodation: Hilton Adelaide
Meals Included: Breakfast, celebration cocktail party.

Day 6 Monday 25 January 2021

Home, James

The tour concludes with breakfast. Some of us will pack our bags, bikes and leave for the airport. Our tour is all but over.

We can easily look after extra accommodation if you choose to stay on. It's a really nice way to round out the holiday. Tomorrow after all is Australia Day.

Whatever you decide - thank you for joining us. Safe travels home…

Meals Included: Breakfast included.
