Wollongong & The UCI Road World Championships

20 - 27 September 2022 (8 Days / 7 Nights) - Sold Out

"After five editions in Europe, the UCI Road World Championships make their way to Wollongong, Australia. Confirming the global reach of one of our sport's major annual events," said UCI president David Lappartient in a press release.

Please join us for what is surely to be your closest ever opportunity to see a Road Cycling World Championships.

This is an opportunity of a lifetime. We plan to combine the standard RH structure of cycling, great restaurants, cafes, wineries, and craft breweries while watching the very best athletes on the planet.

We see our typical day as being similar to following an important TdF stage on say Mont Ventoux. There will be thousands of spectators, so we’ll need to be cunning. Cunning as a fox.

We’ll have a plan A, B and C for every day. Like in France, we won’t know what our access is going to be to the actual UCI race route.

The start of our week will focus on the quality riding that Kiama has to offer. We’ll venture into Wollongong for the business end of the championships.

Our money is on

First - Mathieu van der Poel, 2nd – Wout van Aert, 3rd – Julian Alaphilippe

First - Annemiek van Vleuten, 2nd -  Marianne Vos 3rd – Amanda Spratt

Our Accommodation

Sydney - Novotel Sydney Brighton Beach Hotel

The Novotel Sydney Brighton Beach offers premium 4.5 star accommodation, overlooking the beautiful white sandy beaches of Brighton Le Sands and Australia's famous picturesque Botany Bay. The hotel has a spacious and relaxing Sydney beach-side feel, superbly located in the heart of Brighton Le Sands. The resort facilities will not disappoint with an outdoor pool with sun beds, indoor heated pool, tennis court, fully equipped gym and spa, dedicated kids play area and restaurant and bar facilities.

We chose this hotel because of its proximity to Sydney International Airport which is only 7km away. Also, it's on the right side of the city for our bike ride south. We will leave our bike bags at this hotel.

Kiama - Nova Kiama

The brand-new Nova Kiama hotel is a short walking distance to the beach, great cafes, yummy restaurants and an abundance of shops. Even though Kiama is the largest town in the region, it still resembles the late 19th century charm of the historic seaside harbour town it once was. Kiama perfectly combines the appeal of country hospitality with the laidback lifestyle of a coastal town.

We chose Kiama (30km south) rather than the big city of Wollongong because of its proximity to the great riding in the local hills and along the ocean front. Also, smaller towns are more enjoyable and more relaxing than big cities.

        Wollongong 2022 Tour Itinerary

        Day 1, Tuesday 20 September

        Welcome to Sydney

Feel free to arrive at any stage. We’ll finalise airport transfers closer to the time.

Our hotel is situated right on Brighton Beach so don't be afraid to arrive early and have an extra night.

Today is purely a case of assembling the bikes and popping out for a short ride. We’ll have mechanics close by to look after those airline knocks.

Tonight, we crack open the champagne for our welcome dinner. We’ll introduce the team and run through the plan for the next couple of days. Speaking of teams – we are aware of 3 pro teams that are staying at our hotel. I wonder who?

Please keep in mind that you are now on holiday - all you need to think about is eating, sleeping, drinking and riding. We'll take care of everything else.

/ Accommodation: Novotel Sydney Brighton Beach
        / Meals: Welcome Dinner

        Day 2, Wednesday 21 September

        Sydney to Kiama

Hotel to hotel our ride today is just over 120km. We will have support vehicles close by for the latte and cappuccino cyclists. With a proposed 100km and 70km option.

Our plan is to start early. Please make sure you label your bags clearly. They’ll be in your Kiama hotel room by the time you arrive.

Some patience may be required today as there are a labyrinth of streets and bike lanes to negotiate.

After we negotiate the residential areas, we hit the Royal National Park, almost completely off grid, only 50km from Sydney! Be prepared for a spectacular landscape and some cheeky false flats!

Early Lunch at the Otford Pantry.  – really great pie shop. We’re athletes remember. 2nd pie anyone?

        Get your cameras out! https://www.grandpacificdrive.com.au/

The Sea Cliff Bridge, together with the adjoining Lawrence Hargrave Drive Bridge, are two road bridges that carry the scenic Lawrence Hargrave Drive across the rockface on the Illawarra escarpment. It’s the poster shot for the UCI World Championships.

Our ride does take us via the centre of Wollongong. Challenging ride but we will follow the bike paths through.

Our home for the next five nights is the stunning seaside community of Kiama. This is where those from Sydney come for holiday. It’s beautiful. But busy, which is why we’ve organised all the meals in advance.

Tonight, we’ve booked our own Ride Holidays private function in the Pavilion, overlooking Kiama beach. Dingo is going to say a few words. Please laugh at his jokes. We’ve included beer and wine so that should help.

        / Accommodation: Nova Kiama
/ Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner at the Pavilion. (Including 3-hour drinks package)

        Days 3, Thursday 22 September

        Ride Holidays Fondo

We have 2 sets of plans for today. Both involve your biggest ride of the trip. Let’s call it the RH Fondo day.

Plan A or Plan B will depend on our access to the UCI course. We just don’t know if they’ll allow weekend warriors on the course at the same time as the pros. Despite us probably being a bit quicker than them. It’s our guess at this early stage that the UCI roads may be closed to the public. We’ll see.

Plan A – this involves riding the 35km to Wollongong. We’ll ride both the 35km and 17km UCI loops. You can then choose to either ride back to our Kiama hotel or hop on the train. Total maximum distance is just under 140km.

Plan B – involves a similar mileage (maybe slightly longer) but will head southeast from Kiama through the hills. In all honesty – the riding for plan B would be better than plan A however it won’t have the UCI atmosphere.

Whichever plan we choose, you will be well looked after. We’ll have support vans nearby and lunch will be planned in advance.

         / Accommodation: Nova Kiama
/ Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

        Day 4, Friday 23 September

        Your First UCI Experience

It’s our strong desire to have you on the course for today’s action. New Zealand and Australia will be well represented and it’s probably our best chance of having someone on the podium.

Today it’s the junior men (8.30am to 12noon) and the under 23 men. (1pm to 5pm)

The course is 17km long and the juniors do 8 laps. The under 23’s go an extra couple of laps. It’s pretty much a street crit circuit with one climb. That climb does add up though with the juniors climbing 2000VM and the U23’s 2500VM.

We’ll set up the RH homebase in central Wollongong. Close to the course. You can choose to leave your bike there and head away on foot or head out with one of the guides for an extra loop. This will take you up past 3 figures for the day.

Please note. In all likelihood over the next 3 days, we will ride to Kiama but catch the train home. Reason being that sunset is about 6pm each night. And, at certain points of the Kiama – Wollongong ride route the motorway is unavoidable. We aren’t keen on you riding your bikes on a busy road after dark.

        / Accommodation: Nova Kiama
/ Meals: Breakfast and Dinner. (Lunch own arrangements)

        Day 5 & 6 , Saturday 24 & Sunday 25 September

UCI Elite Road Championships. Men and Women

Both days will be similar. Both will be epic. This is what we’ve come for.

There are 2 races on the Saturday - Junior and Elite women. Sunday is purely for the Elite men. All 3 races have slightly different courses. We’ll focus on the Elite men and women’s races as junior women start at 8am which logistically is impossible.

The Elite women start in the town of Helensburgh, we rode past here on day one!. They have 165km on their schedule. Including almost 2500VM. 6 laps of the 17km street circuit and one lap of the Mount Keira (473m) loop. The race starts at midday and finishes around 5pm.

The men ride the same circuit as the women. The only difference being that they ride the 17km city loop 12 times. Oh, and that adds up to 270km and almost 4000VM. Hmm. The men start slightly earlier at 10am so we’ll need to be early out of the hotel.

On both days we’ll concentrate on a good bike ride in the morning. We think it’s important that you get the chance to watch the presentations. We’ll take care of your bikes and take them back to Kiama so you can relax and catch the train home when you are ready.

What a fantastic weekend of riding, watching the best cyclist in the world, while taking in the amazing atmosphere.

        / Accommodation: Nova Kiama
/ Meals: Breakfast and Dinner. (Lunch own arrangements)

        Day 7, Monday 26 September

        Kiama Back to Sydney

It's time to leave our Kiama paradise and bike back to Sydney. We imagine there could be thousands of cyclists doing exactly the same thing. By now you’ll be fit as a racing sardine, so the distance won’t be an issue. We’ll still have a good cappuccino and latte plan on offer.

This afternoon is all about packing down the bikes and then enjoying our last dinner together.

Thank you for joining Ride Holidays on this unique trip.

I wonder where the World Championships will be when they’re down this way again? Upper Hutt?

/ Accommodation: Novotel Sydney Brighton Beach
/ Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

        Day 8, Tuesday 27 September

        Home James

Our time together finishes after breakfast so feel free to depart on any flight. We’ll arrange airport transfers closer to the time.

Or spend an extra couple of days in Sydney. We can easily take care of any extra accommodation.

Safe travels home. We look forward to seeing you next time,

        Cheers,

        Karl, Dean and Dingo
