12-20 May 2018 (9 days / 8 nights)

Tour of California – Cycle Tour

We have handpicked California’s top bike rides and will merge them with the 2018 Amgen Tour of California once the final race route is released. The Tour of California is easily one of the nation’s largest and most recognised annual sporting events. And Kiwi – George Bennett is the defending champion. Let’s hope he returns in 2018. The secret to a successful bike tour is not to see the race too many times. If it’s a flat relatively boring stage then we would much rather soak up some of that fantastic Californian atmosphere and ride our bikes ourselves. Flexibility is one of our main goals and being a small group allows us to change the plan to suit the riders. Each day there will be two ride options with time to dawdle and sightsee, or gear up and get your heart racing. You choose.

This trip is perfect for non-riding partners or those wanting a rest from the bike. Wine, great food, excellent company, awesome cycling - all while watching North America’s greatest cycling race. This is the perfect holiday.

Because the actual race route and dates won’t be confirmed until September your initial deposit ($500.00) is 100% refundable. We will immediately refund you if the dates, route, price don’t fit with your plans once the final itinerary is released. However, if you would like to confirm your earlybird booking then a further $1500.00 will be required. The balance is to be paid 90 days prior to travel.

Our Tour of California Itinerary

Day 1, Saturday 12 May

Arrive in San Francisco… Welcome to California

Start what is sure to be an unforgettable tour by meeting your guides this afternoon in The City by the Bay, San Francisco. Our vans will leave the airport at 3pm, allowing for the 1pm arrival on Air New Zealand from Auckland. If you prefer to arrive the day earlier then we’ll collect you from your airport hotel. You’re sure to be a bit tired after the long journey to the US, so use today to relax at the hotel and get settled in preparation for our exciting week ahead. Your guides will assist with assembly and fitting of your personal or rental bikes before we gather for a welcome dinner to discuss logistics and the equal importance of food, wine, laughter and overall enjoyment on this California cycling tour.

Location: San Francisco
Meals Included Dinner

Day 2, Sunday 13 May

Magnificent Mount Tam

A great introductory ride awaits us to shake out the long flight from those legs and get accustomed to riding on the other side of the road. This morning we’ll leave from the city’s waterfront and ride over the enchanting Golden Gate Bridge before tackling Marin County’s Mount Tamalpais – Mt. Tam to the locals, but a challenging mountain to conquer regardless of where you’re from. A scenic roller-coaster ridgeline ride will deliver us back down to the edge of the Pacific, where you can then decide to use the bike of van to return to our hotel. Unwind this evening over another fabulous dinner together with the group at a guide-favourite restaurant.

Location: Mill Valley
Meals Included: Breakfast & Dinner

Day 3, Monday 14 May

North to Sonoma County

Get ready to explore some incredible riding that will give you a fine sampling of the vastness Marin and Sonoma have to offer. From ranches and pastures to vineyards that spill into the coast, you’ll have it all at your disposal today. What begins as a fairly gentle route culminates into another stunning climb that has been used in previous iterations of the Tour of California, with the faded names of ProTour contenders still gracing the tarmac in paint. Sonoma has some of the world’s best cycling as well as some internationally awarded wines. A visit to one of the region’s premier winemakers will allow you to sample the literal fruits of their labour – a treat indeed for fans of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir varietals. This evening you’re free to dine on your own and spend your time as you so desire.

Location: Mill Valley
Meals Included: Breakfast

Day 4, Tuesday 15 May

Defeating Diablo

It’s time to check a big one off of the bucket list! An early morning transfer by van to the Bay Area will have us on bikes and on our way up iconic Mount Diablo. This incredible mountaintop has been used in previous versions of the Tour of California, yet this year we’ll have it all to ourselves as we ascend to the stunning summit and take in unrivalled views. At nearly 1,200m above sea level you’re sure to have a good vantage point of Northern California from one of the largest viewsheds in the western United States. Enjoy a grin-inducing 18km descent before the long transfer north to Lake Tahoe, the big blue paradise high in the Sierra Nevada mountains. Tonight’s hotel is in a great central locale, where you’ll be free to dine and spend the rest of the evening as you see fit.

Location: South Lake Tahoe
Meals Included: Breakfast & Lunch

Day 5, Wednesday 16 May

Mind over Mountains

It’s been a few days in the saddle now and you’re sure to have those climbing legs under you. Let’s get on with it! You’re in for a true alpine adventure today and will have a series of cols to conquer. Regardless of if you choose to partake in a two or three col route (double or triple bypass), you’ll have the entire day to knock off parts of the State’s prestigious Death Ride course. Along the way, you’re sure to see excitement building in the area as personnel ready the area for tomorrow’s ProTour stage. Relax those legs this afternoon in the stunning mountain town before we set sail on an evening cruise a la private chartered boat. Enjoy a cocktail as we watch the sun set over the stunning peaks that surround this special place before returning to town to dine independently.

Location: South Lake Tahoe (2nd of 2 nights)
Meals Included: Breakfast

Day 6, Thursday 17 May

Call a heart surgeon

Are you excited? You should be as we’ve got one of the most beautiful bike rides in the world up for grabs today. You’ll circumnavigate Lake Tahoe as part of a 117km loop that will leave you breathless for both its splendor and challenge. The men’s ProTour will be finishing right in town and you’ll be staged at the finish line to see who takes the stage. Furthermore, the first ever UCI Women’s WorldTour event kicks off with their first day of racing right here as well. It’s going to be a marvellous celebration of cycling from sun up to sun down and we’ll be right in the thick of it! We will make our way down to the lower elevation foothills this afternoon to the gold mining hamlet of Placerville in time for you to unwind a bit and grab dinner at a restaurant of your choice

Location: Placerville
Meals Included: Breakfast & Lunch

Day 7, Friday 18 May

To the Capitol

Wake up, enjoy that cappuccino and have a leisurely breakfast before we mount up and descend to the town of Folsom, home to both ProTour time trials for men and women’s races this afternoon. Catch your favorites from the peloton out on the course or in the start corrals trying to make up precious seconds as they fight for that yellow jersey. From Folsom it’s an easy and relaxing spin out along the American River to downtown Sacramento, the State Capitol of California, where we’ll catch the van for our final transfer to Santa Rosa. After a bit of time to clean up we’ll reconvene for another group meal and relive some highlights from the tour thus far.

Location: Santa Rosa
Meals Included: Breakfast & Dinner

Day 8, Saturday 19 May

The Excitement Builds

You’d be hard-pressed to find another city in California with as much passion for cycling as Santa Rosa. Home to previous ProTour starts and finishes, the energy is sure to be through the roof today with spectators rooting for their local favorites and European heros to take the stage win. Again, both the men and women will be sharing the race venue today and we’ll have a chance to browse the festivities before we shove off on our own ride that encompasses some of the region’s quintessential territory, returning to vineyard-lined landscapes taken straight off of a postcard. Back in town, we’ll grab some prime spots to catch the peloton blast into town for the few final circuits before revving it up for a guaranteed sprint finish. Recount your favorite highlights of the tour this evening at dinner, where we’ll raise a toast to an amazing trip and all the memories we’ve made.

Location: Santa Rosa
Meals Included: Breakfast & Dinner

Day 9, Sunday 20 May

Safe travels home

All good things must come to an end, but how about one more ride!? We’ll have a short spin today on a local’s bread and butter route and soak up that last dose of California country living. Returning to our hotel, you’ll have ample time to pack up, clean up, and check out. Guides will transport the group back to a central San Francisco location and for some it’s time to head home, while others will take the liberty to continue their vacation. If direct transit to the airport is required, your guides will get you there. Regardless, bid your new and old friends farewell and safe travels to wherever you’re headed next.
