Join us for the 2019 Santos Tour Down Under. Experience an amazing fun filled, fully organised, 9 day cycling tour and holiday. We are very excited to be starting in the Clare Valley for the first time.

Dates are now confirmed. It is safe to book your flights. Please note – in 2019 we will be starting the actual tour on Sunday the 13th and finishing on Monday the 21st.

In previous years we have seen how tired clients are on day 1. And for this trip the Clare Valley is further away (from Adelaide) that any of our previous starting locations. For that reason we recommend that you arrive one day early on the 12th. We will still collect you from the airport and take you to Clare Valley. The shuttle will depart at midday. We will also organise the pre-tour accommodation.

13 to 21 Jan 2019

Clare Valley, Barossa, Adelaide Hills and the City

RIDE Holidays invites you to experience the 2019 Santos Tour Down Under. One of the best cycling events on the planet. All the stars will be there – Chris Wood, Peter Sagan and Mark Grahame. Pull up a bike seat, sit back and let the world spin by.

We’ve found the perfect mix of visiting the magnificent valleys of Clare and Barossa. Followed by the Adelaide Hills before descending upon the city for the climax of the greatest cycling race in the Southern Hemisphere. Get involved with the action, and experience the thrill of seeing this world class event live!

And, it’s not all about the race. In fact, the race is a small part of a great holiday. We focus on the magnificent cycling on offer, as well as eating at the very best South Australian restaurants and cafes. You will come home having experienced the full flavour of what the region has to offer.

Itinerary tailored for all levels, conditions

Throughout our 9 day tour, we’ve catered to meet the needs of both the cycling die hards right through to the more leisurely cyclist. Take a peep through our itinerary and you’ll be assured that we offer a range of cycling options. And if you want to take a break for a day (or two), we’ve planned some great activities so you can really enjoy the wonders that this region has to offer!

And for non-riders (team Macchiato) you are very very welcome. Be assured, you won’t just be following the cyclists. Your days will include visits to wineries, with a blend of boutique shopping, enjoying the local cafes and restaurants, some walking, plus much more. This group will have their own vehicle and local guide! And by being around it all, you get to enjoy the buzz of the amazing Santos Tour Down Under.

The most common question we have is with regard to the heat. Yes, it can get hot however it can also be very cool. On the 2018 trip we had two very hot days and having local guides meant that we were able to change the itinerary accordingly. We also had three days where we were riding in arm warmers and vests. Basically – we can never tell what the weather will be. What we can do is be flexible and have a plan in place for all conditions.

Tour Down Under Itinerary 2019

Day 1 Sunday 13 Jan

Welcome to South Australia

We look forward to meeting you at Adelaide Airport. It’s just over a two hour drive south to the beautiful Clare Valley which is our starting point for the 2019 tour. Our vehicles will depart Adelaide Airport at just after midday. We’ll then help assemble the bikes and then pop out for a short 20km ride. Purely to get the legs turning and to find those nasty little mechanicals that may pop up.

There will be just enough time for a swim and a refreshment prior to our welcoming BBQ where we’ll run through the plan for the next 9 days. Yes – you are now officially on holiday. Welcome to South Australia.

/ Accommodation: Clare Valley
/ Meals Included: Dinner

PS, as mentioned…. We’d encourage you to arrive the day earlier. New Zealand is only 4-6 hours away from Adelaide. However, once you add a 2 hour time difference as well as 2 hours in the bus getting to the Clare, we can guarantee that you’ll be exhausted. Arriving on the Saturday is without doubt the smart idea and a much better start to your holiday.

Day 2 Monday 14 Jan

Exploring the Valley

Every year we like to explore a new area of South Australia. This year it’s the beautiful Clare Valley. A first for RIDE Holidays.

This region offers some of the best food & wine in South Australia. Today is all about exploring what the valley has to offer. There will be three rides planned. Cappuccino – 60km, Latte – 80km and espresso – 110km plus. Today won’t be overly hilly, certainly when compared to the rest of the week. All rides will feature some of the 35km Clare Valley Riesling Trail (be prepared for some off road cycling) which literally brings the grapes to the cycle path.

So, sit back in the saddle and ride until your heart is content. We’ll have a support van in place if the going gets tough.

Team Macchiato consists of the non-riding group and there’s no prizes for guessing what they’ll be up to. Katrina is their guide and she’s born and bred in this area. You will be well looked after.

/ Accommodation: Clare Valley
/ Meals Included: Breakfast (Dinner own arrangements in town)

Tour Down Under 2018 Tour – Cycle Tours and Holidays

Day 3 Tuesday 15 Jan

Barossa – Boom Boom (at time of writing we haven’t had confirmation of the actual Santos Tour Down Under stages and locations. They won’t be released until July, August however we anticipate that we may see the race in the Barossa today)

We say goodbye to one valley and ride all the way to another. Ever heard of the Barossa? Hotel to hotel is just over 60km however there will certainly be longer distances to choose from. All rides will feature the Jack Bobridge trail, STDU favourite - Menglers hill and also a selection of the Barossa’s most famous wineries. Basically – it’s a case of getting from one valley to the next and showing you everything in between.

Tonight we’ve arranged for a wine tasting. Not just one Barossa winery. A selection of the best. One of our guides (Brett) works in the industry so we’ve called on a few of his mates to bring their finest work. If wine isn’t your thing then we’d certainly recommend rolling down to the local craft brewery for a tasting. Make sure you try the coffee stout. Don’t have too much though as tomorrow we head for the hills. Yes, things have been reasonably flat up until now. Tomorrow that will change.

/ Accommodation: Barossa Weintal
/ Meals Included: Breakfast and Dinner

Day 4 Wednesday 16 Jan

Hills – as many as you can… ** Again, we won’t be sure about the STDU stage until later on in the year however we predict that we’ll be in the right place at the right time for today’s stage.

In previous years we’ve run an event called the Dirty Dozen. Featuring 12 nasty hills in one day. We’ve decided to change things this year and give you the opportunity to knock of those same hills but over a three day period. Some of you will do more, some of you will do less. All 12 hills will feature on your Dirty Dozen t-shirt.

Today is your first chance to tag one or two of those hills as we make our way to Hahndorf. Without doubt the best cycling in the State, arguably in all of Australia. Again we ride hotel to hotel. We will leave early as we want to beat the heat. Your bags will be in your Hahndorf hotel rooms when you arrive.

There will again be three distances to ride. Most importantly – today will be the first time you’ll see the Ride Holidays coffee cart. It will be parked in a secret location at about the half-way point. Packed full of sandwiches, donuts and of course coffee, coffee, coffee.

We also pre-book you a massage while in Hahndorf. This afternoon would be a great time to give back to your legs.

/ Accommodation: The Manna of Hahndorf
/ Meals Included: Breakfast and Lunch (Dinner own arrangements)

Day 5 Thursday 17 Jan

Experience the Tour Down Under up close

Race day… Historically, today is our V.I.P STDU experience. Last year we were sipping champagne 20m away from the finish when the pros rolled through. Our plan is to change nothing… And the good news is that race generally comes to us, literally. The race route isn’t too far away from our hotel. The great thing about the TDU is that unlike the Tour de France you get to see the riders more than once each day.

Oh, I forget to mention – breakfast is at the top of Mt Lofty (700m above sea level) where the café is opening just for us. The big breakfast is unbelievably big, the views are amazing and thousands of cyclists ride this climb daily. Bring your camera.

Ride options of 60kms to 100kms and will include a National Park famous for its Koala spotting. It’s just a shame that it sits at the bottom of a rather large step hill. You’ll be fine…

Tonight we wear our Dirty Dozen t-shirts with pride while grazing on pizza and beer. No doubt a few lies will be told.

/ Accommodation: The Manna of Hahndorf
/ Meals Included: Breakfast and Dinner

Day 6 Friday 18 Jan

6am Start! It’s BUPA time

8,000 fair dinkum Aussies and a handful of fast skinny Kiwis. Its BUPA challenge day. You’ll have three ride choices - 150kms, 110kms and 70kms. All for a good cause - to raise money for cancer research.

This ride is exactly the same route as the TDU professional’s race, they start at 11am and will chase us all the way to the finish. The BUPA is very different to the Taupo Cycle challenge. It’s a lot more relaxed and I’d encourage you to stop at all the food stations and check out the local food and coffee. I for one will be targeting the fruit loaf which I remember fondly.

We arrive at the finish and join all the other riders in a local park. New for 2019 will be the RIDE Holidays Marquee - complete with cold drinks. Dingo will even get the massage table out. Sit back and watch the race finish live or on the big screen.

It’s a free night to check out all that is great about Adelaide. Heading down the secret alley way to the Belgium Beer café for dinner wouldn’t be a silly idea. We’ll point you in the right direction. See you tomorrow.

/ Accommodation: Majestic Roof Garden Hotel
/ Meals Included: Breakfast and Lunch

Tour Down Under 2018 Tour – Cycle Tours and Holidays

Day 7 Saturday 19 Jan

Ned Kelly pie…

We plan to change things around a bit for the 2019 tour. Our day still starts with breakfast at the famous Adelaide Market which simply is a must do. We’ll then all hop on our bikes and head towards Willunga Hill. Queen stage for the 21st anniversary of the Tour Down Under and will ultimately decide the winner of this year’s event.

The main difference to the 2018 trip is that we’ll avoid the bike path and head back in to the hills. Last year we found a magnificent bakery about half way and we’ve ordered 50 Ned Kelly pies. You simply have to try them. Some of you can then choose to see the start of today’s stage in McLaren Vale or simply relax at our own outdoor café set up at the bottom of Willunga hill. With cold drinks, lunch and more importantly a big screen. The pros will go past 5 times.

After the race we all hop in the bus for the trip back to the city. Which will give you plenty of time to dissemble your bikes and put on your nice clothes in time for tonight’s Legends Dinner. Guaranteed to be a highlight you will have plenty of opportunity to have photos with the likes of Peter Sagan and Matthew Hayman. Ladies, bring a frock. Boys, a nice tie will be fine.

/ Accommodation: Majestic Roof Garden Hotel
/ Meals Included: Lunch and Legends Dinner included.

Tour Down Under 2018 Tour – Cycle Tours and Holidays

Day 8 Sunday 20 Jan

Final stage – A must see…

We anticipate that today’s final stage is a must see. That’s why we changed the dates. This won’t be confirmed until later on in the year so you’ll just need to trust us. There’s a lot to see in the city. For all those cool kids – you’ll also get the chance to visit one of the many pop-up shops. (Specialized, Cervelo, Rapha etc) Offering retail therapy, great food and craft beer.

Also, the Tour Village in the City Square is only 750m away from our hotel. This race is known for it’s rider access. Yes, you will see Peter. That is guaranteed.

Today’s total ride will only be around 80kms and we want to target Adelaide’s amazing beaches. (think sharks)

Tonight we dine somewhere special. Again – details can’t be released. You’ll need to wait.

/ Accommodation: Majestic Roof Garden Hotel
/ Meals Included: Breakfast and Dinner

Day 9 Monday 21 Jan

Home, James

The tour concludes with breakfast. Some of us will pack our bags, bikes and leave for the airport. Our Tour Down Under is all but over.

We can easily look after extra accommodation if you choose to stay on. It’s a really nice way to round out the holiday.

Whatever you decide – thank you for joining us. Safe travels home…
