Tour Down Under Itinerary 2018 | SOLD OUT

Day 1 Saturday 13 Jan

Welcome to South Australia

We look forward to meeting you at Adelaide Airport. It’s just over an hour’s drive south to the beautiful Fleurieu Peninsula. Neighbour to the world famous McLaren Vale wine region. Some of you may decide to arrive on the Friday, there’s certainly a lot to do. In fact, there are over 100 cellar doors in the area. We can easily arrange extra accommodation and transport if you choose to do so.

Our vehicles will depart Adelaide Airport at just after midday. We’ll then help assemble the bikes and then pop out for a short 40km ride. Purely to get the legs turning and to find those nasty little mechanicals that may pop up.

There will be just enough time for a swim and a refreshment prior to our welcoming BBQ where we’ll run through the plan for the next 9 days. Yes – you are now officially on holiday. Welcome to South Australia.

/ Accommodation: Fleurieu Peninsula
/ Meals Included: Dinner

Day 2 Sunday 14 Jan

Coast & Wineries… Boom

Every year we like to explore a new area of South Australia. This year it’s the beautiful coastline that is the Fleurieu Peninsula. This region offers some of the best food, wine, wildlife (koalas and sharks) and cycling in the state. As a peninsula, water plays a major part in the recreational activities with long sandy beaches and rugged cliff-scapes.

There will be three rides planned. Cappuccino – 60km, Latte – 80km and espresso – 110km plus. Today won’t be overly hilly, certainly when compared to the rest of the week. So, sit back in the saddle and ride until your heart is content. We’ll have a support van in place if the going gets tough.

Team Champagne consists of the non-riding group and there’s no prizes for guessing what they’ll be up to. Katrina is their guide and she’s born and bred in this area. You will be well looked after.

Today is a full day of exploration, coffee, great food and company – what else do you need. Ahhhh, how about a wine tasting. That should make the day complete.

/ Accommodation: Fleurieu Peninsula
/ Meals Included: Breakfast and Dinner

Day 3 Monday 15 Jan

Adelaide Hills – here we come

We say goodbye to the Fleurieu and make our way thru McLaren Vale wine region towards the best cycling in South Australia, arguably in all of Australia - The Adelaide Hills. From our hotel to Hahndorf in a straight line is just over 60kms however our route is anything but straight. There will again be three distances to ride. Some of you may want to save your legs for tomorrow is a beast. Actually – 12 beasts.

We will leave the hotel early as we want to beat the heat. Your bags will be in your Hahndorf hotel rooms when you arrive.

Today you’ll see the Ride Holidays coffee cart for the first time. It will be parked in a secret location at about the half-way point. Packed full of sandwiches, donuts and of course coffee, coffee, coffee.

We also pre-book you a massage while in Hahndorf. This afternoon would be a great time to give back to your legs. Tonight is dining in the Haus. This trip isn’t a weight loss program. Eat up.

/ Accommodation: The Manna of Hahndorf
/ Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 4 Tuesday 16 Jan

Dirty Dozen

We will see plenty of the Tour Down Under. The key to a good cycling holiday is not to see the race too many times and today’s stage is relatively flat so we’ll give it a miss and concentrate on the fantastic riding that the region has to offer.

We’ve created our own challenges - The Dirty Dozen and Half Dozen. The challenge targets the local hills in the Mt Lofty ranges. It will really test your legs. Having local guides means that we change the route - year after year. Sometimes on the day…

For those doing the full dozen - our day starts early as we’ll knock off 4 of the 12 hills prior to breakfast.

Oh, I forget to mention – breakfast is at the top of Mt Lofty (700m climb) where the café is opening just for us. The big breakfast is unbelievably big, the views are amazing and thousands of cyclists ride this climb daily. Bring your camera.

Tonight we wear our Dirty Dozen t-shirts with pride while grazing on pizza and beer. No doubt a few lies will be told. All for a good cause as we hold our annual Cancer Council charity auction.

/ Accommodation: The Manna of Hahndorf
/ Meals Included: Breakfast and Pizza

Day 5 Wednesday 17 Jan

Experience the Tour Down Under up close

Race day… Your first Tour Down Under experience. We will see the race live the next 4 to 5 days. And the good news is that race comes to us, literally. The race route isn’t too far away from our hotel in the town of Stirling. The great thing about the TDU is that unlike the Tour de France you get to see the riders more than once each day.

In fact, today you will see them numerous times as they complete the traditional Stirling loop. RH has our very own V.I.P pen on the race route in Stirling. You’ll be greeted with Champagne and strawberries before literally rubbing shoulders with the world’s most famous riders.

Ride options of 60kms to 100kms and will include a National Park famous for its Koala spotting. It’s just a shame that it sits at the bottom of a rather large step hill. You’ll be fine…

/ Accommodation: The Manna of Hahndorf
/ Meals Included: Breakfast

Day 6 Thursday 18 Jan

Transfer day and Pasta smash

Today we leave our Adelaide Hills haven and head to the city. Again we bike from hotel to hotel, catching up with the TDU along the way. Today’s total ride will only be around 70kms as we need to save our legs for tomorrow’s epic. We’ll arrive into Adelaide early afternoon which allows plenty of time to shower and check out the Tour Village in the City Square. Only 750m away from our hotel where all the teams and riders will be.

For all those cool kids – you’ll also get the chance to visit one of the many pop-up shops. (Specialized, Cervelo, Rapha etc) Offering retail therapy, great food and craft beer.

Tonight we dine on pasta. Let’s keep it simple. In fact, the restaurant is only 40 metres away from our hotel. Give the people food.

Some of you may then choose to catch a taxi to the TDU street party – a massive celebration. All in the name of cycling. Make sure you get some beauty sleep though as tomorrow is a very early start.

/ Accommodation: Majestic Roof Garden Hotel
/ Meals Included: Breakfast and Dinner

Day 7 Friday 19 Jan

6am Start! It’s BUPA time

8,000 fair dinkum Aussies and a handful of fast skinny Kiwis. Its BUPA challenge day. You’ll have three ride choices - 150kms, 110kms and 70kms. All for a good cause - to raise money for cancer research.

This ride is exactly the same route as the TDU professional’s race, they start at 11am and will chase us all the way to the finish. The BUPA is very different to the Taupo Cycle challenge. It’s a lot more relaxed and I’d encourage you to stop at all the food stations and check out the local food and coffee. I for one will be targeting the fruit loaf which I remember fondly.

En route 2017 saw us chatting with Jens Voight and top women’s racer Netti Edmonson, very social indeed!

We arrive at the finish and join all the other riders in a local park. New for 2018 will be the RIDE Holidays Marquee - complete with cold drinks. Dingo will even get the massage table out. Sit back and watch the race finish live or on the big screen.

It’s a free night to check out all that is great about Adelaide. Heading back to the Tour Village for a beer wouldn’t be such a silly idea. See you tomorrow.

/ Accommodation: Majestic Roof Garden Hotel
/ Meals Included: Breakfast and Lunch

Day 8 Sat 20 Jan

Willunga Hill, the Grand Finale

Queen stage for the 20th anniversary of the Tour Down Under and will ultimately decide the winner of this year’s event. Our day starts early… a must do for this city is to experience the famous Adelaide Market where we suggest you have breakfast and sample the best coffee in South Australia. We’ll then jump on our bikes and ride 50kms to Willunga Hill – the showpiece for the TDU each year. The atmosphere is Alpe d’Huez like as almost one hundred thousand people cram the last 4km of this hilltop finish.

We have our own outdoor café set up at the bottom of the hill. With cold drinks, lunch and more importantly a big screen. Your choice - sit back and relax in our shady little haven or head up the hill and watch the race come through.

Most of us will then cruise the 50km back to town. Every year we are accompanied by the pro teams.

And now for the highlight of the whole trip. We’ve booked ringside. In the middle will be Peter Sagan and Jens Voigt. Yes – we are all going to the Legends Dinner. Ladies, bring a frock. Boys, a nice tie will be fine. It’s sure to be a night you won’t forget.

/ Accommodation: Majestic Roof Garden Hotel
/ Meals Included: Lunch and Legends Dinner included.

Day 9 Sun 21 Jan

Home James

The tour concludes with breakfast. Some of us will pack our bags, bikes and leave for the airport. Our Tour Down Under is all but over.

A lot of you will decide to stay on for today’s Adelaide closing stage. If you don’t have any time restraints then I’d really recommend this. The street lap circuit is only 750m away from our hotel.

We can easily look after extra accommodation and can even offer V.I.P grandstand tickets. It’s a really nice way to round out the holiday.

Whatever you decide – thank you for joining us. Safe travels home…
