Queensland including the Noosa Classic

7 - 15 August 2022 (9 Days / 8 Nights)

Let's face it - August is a great time to leave winter behind and head somewhere warmer. Queensland is a pretty good place to head to with temperatures in the mid-twenties. It's also the ideal time to get some miles in the legs prior to spring. This holiday has been structured around the traditional RH goal of finding the perfect balance of exercise, holiday and socialising. We'll start off slowly before challenging ourselves on the last day with the beautiful Noosa Classic which is up to 160km (shorter distances available)

      Day 1 - Sunday 7 August

      Welcome to Queensland

We like making things easy. It is a holiday after all. We've picked a Sunday start so you can take advantage of the direct Auckland - Maroochydore flight. We'll be there to meet you at the airport. If you are travelling from other cities in New Zealand and you have to fly in to Brisbane then that's fine. We'll meet you as well. Maroochydore is the preferred airport though. Our hotel for the next four nights is perfectly located a stones throw from Mooloolaba beach. It has everything - restaurants, cafés, bars. Perfect for relaxing. The plan for today is simple - arrive, eat, drink, rest, bike or walk… that's a great plan - let's roll that out for the next 9 days. Late this afternoon we throw all the bikes together and head out for a short ride. Tonight, we dine together where Dingo will run through the plan and introduce you to the team. Welcome to Queensland. Beautiful one day, perfect the next.

      Day 2 - Monday 8 August

      Double shot thanks

We really want to start easy. July and August aren't the best training months, so we won't overdo it on our first ride. We have local guides so today is purely a tour of the local beaches and river. The other great thing about having local guides is their personal knowledge when it comes to beans. That's coffee beans. Just make sure you double up on the caffeine as it's standard in Australia for cafes to offer single shot. The total distance is only 50km and we'll throw in a couple of hills… you simply must ride up a hill to get a view. Call it a False flat. It's the ideal ride to make sure the bike is working as it should. We also have a mechanic on standby. This afternoon we recommend you spend it by the giant pool. Bring out those speedos - they're almost compulsory on this side of the ditch.

Team Macchiato - for this trip we won't have a full-time non-riding guide. Which is why your cost is a lot cheaper. Purely because the places we're staying have great beaches, cafes and shopping, all within walking distance so we see this as very much a relaxing holiday for you. However, we will offer optional activities, and this will be discussed every night. Perhaps consider a shared hire car between the non riders? Were happy to assist.

Let's meet in the bar for happy hour at 6pm prior to dinner.

      Day 3 - Tuesday 9 August

      Great Dividing Range

OK, time to ramp things up a bit. Not a lot, just a bit. After breakfast we ride south to Caloundra where we turn inland and upwards. Our target today is the Bald Knob Road (you what?) which eventually takes us to Maleny at the top of the Range. As in Great Dividing Range. Bring your camera. And now for target number two - Rick's Garage & Diner for lunch. You simply can't come to this part of the world without visiting Rick. Hopefully Team Mac will join us. After lunch we return via Balmoral Ridge Rd which is simply stunning. It's then a reasonably gentle 30km ride back to our hotel. Ride distances will vary today. The espresso cyclists top out at just on 100km. Cappuccino - let's aim for 60km. Latte - somewhere in the middle.

It's a free night. There are lots of bars and restaurants to choose from. If everyone wants to eat together the Dingo will book something in advance.

      / Accommodation - Mantra Mooloolaba
/ Meals - Breakfast and Lunch at Rick's (Dinner own arrangements)

      Day 4 - Wednesday 10 August

      Buderim 9

It's our last day before we head north. Let's make the most of it. In Adelaide the Dirty Dozen is world (well Adelaide) famous, which is why we ride it every year. In Mooloolaba the Buderim 9 is the ride to do. So, that's our challenge for today. It's great for all levels as you can simply pull the plug when you've had enough, ie. it could be the Buderim 7 if you prefer. It's your holiday - you decide. Buderim is a small suburb atop Mt Buderim, right behind Mooloolaba. Whilst it may only be approx. 200m high (Mt Victoria in Wellington) don't let that fool you as there is no easy way up Buderim. The official event sees almost 1900m of vertical climbing in 76klms with a 3hour time limit. We won't have a time limit and we'll be stopping for coffee and cake, but it will be a challenge. Who's up for it?

Tonight, we eat together as there are logistics to discuss. See you at dinner. Make sure you wear you're RIDE Holidays Buderim 9 t-shirt.

      Day 5 - Thursday 11 August

      Noosa - here we come

While researching this trip I forced my family into a week's holiday in Noosa. It's hard to imagine a more idyllic place. Which I guess is why half of New Zealand's retirees live there from June to September. Anyway, it's the perfect location for our last four nights. There are great beaches, fantastic walks, awesome cafes and restaurants and there's also quite a bit to do for those who find it hard to relax. There's even fishing for those addicts like me.

We ride from Mooloolaba to Noosa along the Coast Rd. Hotel to hotel ride distances vary between 80 and 130km. We'll have the support van close by so hop in when you've had enough. There are approximately 120 cafes to choose from for lunch. This trip certainly isn't a weight loss program.

Our hotel for the next four nights is perfectly located about 500m away from the popular Hastings street. It's just far enough away to be quiet and yet close enough to wander down for an ice-cream.

      Day 6 - Friday 12 August

      Pro hours

Noosa is extremely popular with professional athletes. Great climate, food and roads. Today we ride from our hotel to Boreen Point and back. A loop which can either be 60 or 100km - you choose. It also gives you the perfect tour of the local beaches. In fact, we suggest we call in at one of the many surf clubs on the way home for a soft shandy. It's also the perfect time of the year for whales and dolphins - we saw them daily when I visited, so keep your eyes open.

The plan for this afternoon is nothing. Nothing, nothing, nothing. Hang out at the pool, get in some retail therapy, walk the beach or check out the National Park. (Which is a must by the way. There are about 8 different walking tracks ranging from 2 - 10km in length)

Tonight, we are free, to do what we want, any old time. (sorry)

      / Accommodation - Peppers Resort
/ Meals included - Breakfast (Dinner own arrangements)

      Day 7 - Saturday 13 August

      Eumundi Market

World famous - this market is well worth a visit. It's about 20km in each direction. We're going to suggest a reasonably early departure. We'll have the van there for your casual clothes. Lycra at a farmer's market isn't cool. Please can you buy me some chocolate fudge. Thanks.

On the way home, we'll call in to the Noosa Classic expo and pick up our registration kit. No doubt the press will want interviews. Hold my beer!!

This afternoon the team will wash the bikes and give them a bit of tune. Your job is to take the weight off. Just relax. Tomorrow is a big day. Tonight, we've booked a little Pizza restaurant. It's awesome and is the only place in town that serves craft beer.

      Sleep well.

/ Meals included - Breakfast and Dinner

      Day 8 - Sunday 14 August

      Noosa Classic

Three choices - 45km, 120km or the big boy - 160km. Today is the day to push the boat out. Challenge yourself. You'll be fit by this stage of the trip.

It's a very scenic course that spends most of its time up in the Hinterland. It's also very safe as it's been widely accepted by the local community. The start and finish are in a nice park about 6kms away from our hotel. Today isn't about racing. It's all about enjoying the ride and meeting a few new friends. We'll have the RH marquee set up for you for when you finish.

Tonight, we've booked somewhere special for dinner. It's almost time to say goodbye. Thanks for an enjoyable 9 days. Hmm, do we have to go home?

      / Accommodation - Peppers Resort
/ Meals included - Breakfast, lunch and Dinner

      Day 9 - Monday 15 August

      Home, James

All good things must come to an end. After breakfast we'll run shuttles to Brisbane international airport. There aren't any direct flights to NZ from Maroochydore until Wednesday. (now there's a good excuse to extend the holiday by 2 nights)

Thank you for holidaying with Ride Holidays. We look forward to seeing you on another adventure soon.
