11 to 20 Jan 2020 (provisional dates)

Kangaroo Island, Adelaide Hills and the City

RIDE Holidays invites you to experience the 2020 Santos Tour Down Under. One of the best cycling events on the planet. Pull up a bike seat, sit back and let the world spin by.

We start and finish at the same hotel in Adelaide. We've found the perfect mix of visiting off the beaten track destinations like Kangaroo Island. Followed by the Adelaide Hills before descending upon the city for the climax of the greatest cycling race in the Southern Hemisphere. Get involved with the action, and experience the thrill of seeing this world class event live!

And, it's not all about the race. In fact, the race is a small part of a great holiday. We focus on the magnificent cycling on offer, as well as eating at the very best South Australian restaurants and cafes. You will come home having experienced the full flavour of what the region has to offer.

Itinerary tailored for all levels, conditions

Throughout our 10 day tour, we've catered to meet the needs of both the cycling die hards, right through to the more leisurely cyclist. Take a peep through our itinerary and you'll be assured that we offer a range of cycling options. And if you want to take a break for a day (or two), we've planned some great activities so you can really enjoy the wonders that this region has to offer!

And for non-riders (team Macchiato) you are very very welcome. Be assured, you won't just be following the cyclists. Your days will include visits to wineries, with a blend of boutique shopping, enjoying the local cafes and restaurants, some walking, plus much more. This group will have their own vehicle and local guide! And by being around it all, you get to enjoy the buzz of the amazing Santos Tour Down Under.

The most common question we have is with regard to the heat. Yes, it can get hot however it can also be very cool. On the 2018 trip we had two very hot days and having local guides meant that we were able to change the itinerary accordingly. We also had three days where we were riding in arm warmers and vests. Basically - we can never tell what the weather will be. What we can do is be flexible and have a plan in place for all conditions.

Santos Tour Down Under Itinerary 2020

Day 1 Saturday 11 Jan

Welcome to South Australia

We look forward to meeting you at Adelaide Airport. Today is purely an arrival day. Our vehicles will depart Adelaide Airport at just after midday. Ideally most of you will arrive late morning. This afternoon we'll help you assemble the bikes and then pop out for a short ride. Purely to get the legs turning and to find those nasty little mechanicals that may pop up.

There will be just enough time for a quiet refreshment prior to our welcoming dinner where we'll run through the plan for the next 10 days. Yes - you are now officially on holiday. Welcome to South Australia.

/ Accommodation: Majestic Roof Garden hotel - Adelaide
/ Meals Included: Dinner

PS, you are very welcome to arrive the day prior. We will arrange extra accommodation and airport transfers for you.

Day 2 Sunday 12 Jan

Off to Kangaroo Island

Every year we like to explore a new area of South Australia. This year it's the beautiful Kangaroo Island. A first for RIDE Holidays.

Because it's generally quite warm in Adelaide at this time of the year we like to ride our bikes early. So, prior to breakfast we hop on the bikes for a tour of Adelaide and its surrounding beaches. The ride itself will only be about 50km. Don't be shocked - there's another 8 days of riding after today so it's good to ease in to things.

We've booked a café on the beach for breakfast. It's then back to the hotel for a quick shower prior to hoping on the bus for the 100km drive to the short ferry ride. We hope to have you at our Kangaroo Island hotel by late afternoon. The island is Australia's version of Galapagos. Over a third of the island is protected in nature reserves, home to native wildlife like sea lions, koalas and diverse bird species. In the west, Flinders Chase National Park is known for penguin colonies and striking coastal rock formations, like the sculpted Remarkable Rocks and the stalactite-covered Admirals Arch.

/ Accommodation: Kangaroo Island
/ Meals Included: Breakfast and Dinner

Day 3 Monday 13 Jan

Exploring the Island

Today is all about exploring the Island and what it has to offer. There will be three rides planned. Cappuccino - 50km, Latte - 70km and espresso - 110km plus. Today won't be overly hilly, certainly when compared to later on in the week.

All rides will feature the Flinders Chase NP. Specifically, the Admirals Arch and Remarkable Rocks which are truly remarkable. (sorry) So, sit back in the saddle and ride until your heart is content. We'll have a support van in place if the going gets tough.

We aren't time pressured by the race until later on in the week so there's plenty of time to stop for photos. The wildlife is prolific. Some are friendly, some are not. If it slithers or has a fin then do not pat. Dingo is in charge of animal safety. What could go wrong!!

Team Macchiato consists of the non-riding group and there's no prizes for guessing what they'll be up to. Katrina is your guide and she's born and bred in this area. You will be well looked after.

/ Accommodation: Kangaroo Island
/ Meals Included: Breakfast (Dinner own arrangements in Kingscote)

Day 4 Tuesday 14 Jan

Vivonne Bay

Google will tell you that Vivonne Bay is one of Australia's best beaches. That's a big call however google is always right. Let's ride and check it out. It's 80km away from our hotel so we'll ride there and catch the bus back. Unless of course you are a fan of EPO. In which case, you can ride both directions.

We also visit Seal Bay. Other than the Australian sea-lion (where there are seals there are generally sharks) colony it is also home to a fleet of pelicans.

For those smart people who decide to bus back we'll call in to a winery or a craft beer brewery for a late lunch, early wine. The perfect day - 80km in the saddle, a nice swim and a winery. Must be time for an afternoon snooze.

/ Accommodation: Kangaroo Island
/ Meals Included: Breakfast (Dinner own arrangements in Kingscote)

Day 5 Wednesday 15 Jan

It's off to the Hills!!

We leave our Island paradise today and make our way to Hahndorf in the Adelaide Hills. Without doubt the best cycling in the State, arguably in all of Australia. We will have plenty of ride options today, from 20 to 100km its up to you.

In previous years we've run an event called the Dirty Dozen. Featuring 12 nasty hills in one day. We've decided to change things this year and give you the opportunity to knock off those same hills but over a three day period. Some of you will do more, some of you will do less. All 12 hills will feature on your Dirty Dozen t-shirt. Today is your first chance to tag one or two of those hills as we make our way to Hahndorf. As always, we will leave early as we want to beat the heat. Your bags will be in your Hahndorf hotel rooms when you arrive.

You may also get the chance to see the Santos Tour Down Under for the first time. We also pre-book you a massage while in Hahndorf. This afternoon would be a great time to give back to your legs.

/ Accommodation: The Manna of Hahndorf
/ Meals Included: Breakfast and Dinner

Day 6 Thursday 16 Jan

Experience the Santos Tour Down Under up close

Race day… Historically, today is our V.I.P TDU experience. Last year we were sipping champagne 20m away from the finish when the pros rolled through. Our plan is to change nothing… And the good news is that race is less than 10km away from our hotel. The great thing about the TDU is that unlike the Tour de France you get to see the riders more than once each day.

Oh, I forget to mention - breakfast is at the top of Mt Lofty (700m above sea level) where the café is opening just for us. The big breakfast is unbelievably big, the views are amazing and thousands of cyclists ride this climb daily. Bring your camera.

Ride options of 60kms to 100kms and will include a National Park famous for its Koala spotting. It's just a shame that it sits at the bottom of a rather large steep hill. You'll be fine…

Tonight we wear our Dirty Dozen t-shirts with pride while grazing on pizza and beer. No doubt a few lies will be told.

/ Accommodation: The Manna of Hahndorf
/ Meals Included: Breakfast and Dinner

Day 7 Friday 17 Jan

Off to the city we go…

We leave our Adelaide Hills paradise and head to the city. We'll again catch up with the TDU (stage 4) along the way and hopefully the RH coffee cart. More importantly we want to have you in Adelaide early afternoon. Before the heat kicks in. You should have some down time prior to tomorrows big ride.

There's a lot to see in the city. For all those cool kids - you'll also get the chance to visit one of the many pop-up shops. (Specialized, Cervelo, Rapha etc) Offering retail therapy, great food and craft beer.

The City of Adelaide Tour Village in the City Square is only 750m away from our hotel. This race is known for it's rider access, so you'll rub shoulders with legends!

Tonight, we've arranged pasta. Pasta, pasta, pasta. You'll need every ounce of it come 6am.

/ Accommodation: Majestic Roof Garden Hotel
/ Meals Included: Breakfast and Dinner

Day 8 Saturday 18 Jan

6am Start! It's Challenge Tour time

Thousands of fair dinkum Aussies and a handful of fast skinny Kiwis. It's Challenge Tour day. You'll have three ride choices - 158kms, 102kms and 60kms. All for a good cause - to raise money for cancer research.

This ride is exactly the same route as the TDU professional's race, they start late morning and will chase us all the way to the finish. The Challenge Tour is very different to the Taupo Cycle challenge. It's a lot more relaxed and I'd encourage you to stop at all the food stations and check out the local food and coffee. I for one will be targeting the fruit loaf which I remember fondly.

We arrive at the finish and join all the other riders in a local park. RH will have a meeting point along with cold drinks. Dingo will even get the massage table out. Sit back and watch the race finish live or on the big screen.

After the race we all hop in the bus for the trip back to the city. Which will give you plenty of time to put on your nice clothes in time for tonight's Legends' Night Dinner. Guaranteed to be a highlight you will have plenty of opportunity to have photos with the likes of Peter Sagan and Matthew Hayman. Ladies, bring a frock. Boys, a nice tie will be fine.

/ Accommodation: Majestic Roof Garden Hotel
/ Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner (Legends' Night)

Day 9 Sunday 19 Jan

Final stage - A must see…

Boom Boom. Willunga Hill on a Sunday. Last stage of the Santos Tour Down Under. Our day still starts with breakfast at the Glenelg Beach which simply is a must do. We'll then all hop on our bikes and head towards Willunga Hill. Queen stage for the 2020 TDU will ultimately decide the winner of this year's event. In fact, it may just be decided in the last 100m of the race.

Plans are in place to have you as near to the top of the hill as we possibly can. It's a big occasion. You're worth it.

It's also our last night on tour so we'll celebrate with a nice dinner near Willunga. You won't lose weight on this tour.

/ Accommodation: Majestic Roof Garden Hotel
/ Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner included.

Day 10 Monday 20 Jan

Home, James

The tour concludes with breakfast. Some of us will pack our bags, bikes and leave for the airport. Our tour is all but over.

We can easily look after extra accommodation if you choose to stay on. It's a really nice way to round out the holiday.

Whatever you decide - thank you for joining us. Safe travels home…

/ Meals Included: Breakfast included.
