2018 Peaks Challenge Itinerary (SOLD OUT)
Thursday 08 March
Our vehicles will leave Melbourne International Airport just after 12.30pm. There are 6am flights out of Wellington, Auckland and Christchurch which connect perfectly. Or, you may prefer the more relaxed option and spend the Wednesday night at one of the Melbourne Airport hotels.
Our primary objective for today is to get you to Falls Creek as quickly as possible. Some of you will have been up since 3am NZT. Ouch. It’s just over a 5 hour drive. We’ll of course stop for athlete refreshments along the way – that being coffee and pies. For some reason Dingo is an expert on where the best pies are.
Once we reach Falls Creek you’ll be keen on breaking out the bikes. Dean will have all his tools just in case there’s a problem. Chef Dingo will slap up a nutritious fine dining experience. We’ll also have the odd bottle of wine to polish off. Cheers to you. Welcome to the Victorian Highlands.
Meals included – Dinner
Friday 09 March
Today we will ride to prepare for the big event on Sunday. Falls Ck resort sits on top of the mountain, all roads lead down, so down we go! Today we will ride down the ‘front side’ of Falls to Mt Beauty, all 35km of it! A quick coffee stop before climbing the Tawonga Gap, before making our way down to Bright. This is all race route for Sunday, preparation is everything when you’re doing this for real with 2000 others….
We will stop for the lunch and the afternoon at the Bright Brewery, ‘’refresh and relax with a full flavoured craft beer, either outside on the Hop Terrace looking over the riverside parkland or at the bar where you can explore our beers and seasonal brews across 24 taps. Indulge in delicious beer-matched meals while watching the brewing action unfold right next to the bar.’’ Sounds good!
Our vehicles will collect us and drive back up the days route, save your legs, there’s more to come!
Did we mention massage? Yes, all arranged. Pre-booked in fact. One has to be quick in this world.
This evening - sit back and relax. Dean’s cooking – what could go wrong…

Easy does it…
Let’s ride the back side of Falls this morning, across the top of the mountain valley and then down the steep descent. All the way to ‘WTF’ corner, you will understand this name tomorrow! We will then head to Anglers Rest, following reverse race route, enjoying the picturesque valleys of the Victorian highlands. We will stop at Anglers Rest for lunch. More carbo loading, don’t hold back as you’ll need them tomorrow!
Back on the bikes we make our way back to WTF, luckily our vehicles again will pick us up for the drive up the famous, ‘back side of Falls!’ you will conquer this on the bike tomorrow.
We will check out the village square today and attend the riders briefing. The atmosphere is electric. 2000 slightly crazy, nervous excited, fit cyclists and many normal, sane, smart supporters.
Massage is again an option. We’ll book this in advance.
What’s for dinner chef? EPO induced Pasta and red red wine. That’s a winning formula.

A 5am wake up call, today you’ll tackle the ascents of Tawonga Gap, Mount Hotham and finally, the beast that is the Back of Falls. The Back of Falls will hit you like a tonne of bricks. With 200km in your legs, you’ll quickly learn why the first pinch is called WTF corner. It’s a steep and relentless climb with little reprieve.
This ride is fully supported, you will join 2000 others starting in waves, and ride one of the hardest fondo’s in the world!
Ride Holidays will be there; at the start and finishing lines, and maybe a few of us even on the race route.
When you finish, join the rest of the finishers on the lawns of the village square! Drink up - you’re worth it!
Meals included - Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Celebration lunch at De Bortoli winery – we deserve it
There will be a few sore bodies today. Our team will help you pack up the bikes this morning. You may not want to see them again for a few weeks. We’ll grab a coffee or three as we leave town. Quick café stop in Mt Beauty, okay one more can’t hurt….
We think today should be all about celebrating. And there isn’t a better place to do this than the Yarra Valley. A short three hour drive from Falls Creek. We’ve booked a fine dining experience for lunch at the famous De Bortoli winery.
It’s then only a short drive back to Melbourne. We’ve booked a hotel at the airport as many of you depart on tomorrow’s early flight. Dean and Dingo will head home so we suggest you all catch up in the bar. Beer and Chips please. Cheers everyone.
