About Ride Holidays
Karl Woolcott has been successfully organising cycling holidays since 2005 and has helped hundreds of lycra-clad Kiwis and Australians cycle all around the world. He is a passionate cyclist who also doubles as a travel agent so can easily take care of travel insurance, flights and extra accommodation etc. His point of difference is that he can organise a door-to-door experience which rules out the risks associated with taking your bike overseas.
- Is my bike covered by insurance?
- What will the airline charge?
- Can I fit a bike in a taxi in Paris?
- Can I take gas cartridges on the plane?
There are literally hundreds of questions that Karl can easily take care of for you.
Karl’s sporting back ground was split between running, tennis and golf. Since the year 2000 he’s mainly been involved with triathlon, specifically half and full Ironman distance races which yielded a couple of age group wins and a few minor placings. Although an accomplished athlete, Karl is often found being Tail End Charlie on his cycle tours. He gets a really buzz from encouraging slower riders up a big hill, often providing a helpful push when needed.
The team for each trip is different. Although there is a core consistency. Dean Mills and Chris Wood travel with Karl on the majority of trips. Dean’s i.t skills as well as his ride planning capabilities are one of the factors that sets RIDE Holidays above other companies. Chris is a very experienced guide who likes to think that he’s very funny. On each tour we try to employ some locals. For example, the Tour Down Under team consists of Karl, Dean and Adelaide locals – Chris, Andrew Leach, Wayne Haskard, Shaun and Sally Caire. Shaun is the qualified mechanic and Sally is in charge of the non-riding activities. In France the team includes two French guides – Jerome an ex pro cyclist and Morgan who is a full time driver and mechanic.
Most importantly - the team has worked together for almost 10 years. We understand how Kiwis and Australians work. We provide structure, however we recognise that a lot of cyclists don’t want to feel as though they are following a tourist flag so we also offer freedom when it’s safe to do so. We also understand that non-riding partners are as important as the cyclist. We guarantee that they will have as much fun as those on the bikes.
Finally – there are a lot of internet tour agencies that offer cycle tours. Do you know them? Exactly who are you handing over your money to? Will they turn up at the airport? Will the hire bikes be OK? 100% of RIDE Holidays’ finances are held by House of Travel Wellington who are fully TAANZ & IATA bonded. There is zero liability risk and also a decade of experience to make sure that your cycling holiday runs smoothly.
